Carved Stone Artifact

I have emailed several museums and college anthropological departments to determine the origins of this item. Surprisingly, the answers varied. Most believe it is Alaskan. It is shaped like a whales tooth but is very heavy, some type of stone it seems. There are no identifying insignia's except someone wrote the number 875 on the bottom in a permanent ink. You have to look very close to see it.
The story of this item is as follows:
My mother passed away in San Luis Obispo CA in 2009 at the age of 83. My father, several years older than she, passed away in 98. They were avid antique collectors spending much of their retirement years visiting antique shops and flea markets looking for hidden treasures. When I cleaned out their house I took several boxes of these items. This was among the antiques that belong to my father. I do not know what it is or where it is from other than it seems very old.
