ORIGINAL CARTE DE VISITE IMAGE OF CONFEDERATE GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST. Bust View in Confederate Uniform. Backmark of E. & H.T. Anthony, Broadway, New York. NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST 1821-1877. With no formal military training, Gen. Forrest became one of the leading Cavalry figures in the Western Theatre of the War. A native of Tennessee, he amassed a fortune estimated at $1,000,500.00 as a slave dealer and plantation owner before the War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private, later he raised a mounted battalion at his own expense. Colonel of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry; appt. Brigadier General July 21st, 1862; commanded a Cavalry Division, Army of Tennessee, and later a Cavalry Corps.When the Confederate break-out attempt at Fort Donelson failed, Forrest led his own men out with some other troops. He formed the rear guard on the retreat from Shiloh; served during the Corinth Siege; later re-captured Murfreesboro, its garrison and supplies. He also captured the Union column under Union Gen. Abel D. Streight in the spring of 1863. When Forrest captured Fort Pillow, a controversy developed over the report of a massacre of the large Black garrison.
