Description : From the collection of B A Wellman, we are offering one of the tallest items made by the Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison Wisconsin. Designed by Betty Harrington and decorated under the supervision of friend & neighbor Zona Liberace this piece is titled “Lutist”one of the “Kings Jesters”. Matching "Flutist"is on sale this week as well. In a 1980’s interview for my ‘Ceramic Arts Studio informational VideoBook (first works out on the subject) Betty says she got the idea from one of (Lee’s) Liberace’s stage costumes. In his autobiography there is a B&W photo of him in this costume with the figure on a shelf behind him. I bought these examples from Betty in the 1980’s. She told me they were examples from Zona’s art department as to how the figure should look when decorated. This example is glazed in a white & brown outfit with pink accents. These were introduced late in the company’s history and not many were produced or survived. Betty told me their size made them a problem to ship and display and that they were not a favorite of the management that considered these issues.
