THE BUD JEFFREY COLLECTION On March 1, 1971, a Scout Executive of the Katahdin Area Council was given the opportunity and responsibility to set up and operate The Maine-Matagamon National High Adventure program. On July 1, 1971, the program opened! This was the first of several National High Adventure bases. The old Regional Canoe bases in Minnesota (Region 10) and Wisconsin (Region 7) became part of the program. They were joined by Florida which later became the sea base and The Land Between The Lakes in Tennessee which only existed for a couple of years. Bud Jeffrey was the originator and first Director of the program that was to become Maine National High Adventure, BSA, featuring a flexible program including canoeing and or backpacking in a 5 million acre wilderness. Matagamon, the original base, requires a 2 mile pontoon boat ride across Grand Lake Matagamon to reach the base. Under his direction, the program grew to include a second base at Pitston Farm (Seboomook 1973), a gateway and Okpik center in Howland (1981) and for one season, a downeast base at St Croix (1979) with 200 British Scouts attending. In 1992, National decided to eliminate MNHA and the Maine Councils took over operation of the program beginning in 1993.
