Rare Child's BrownAesthetic TransferwareToy Waste Bowl LITTLE MAY WITH APRONFUL OF EGGS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890 This is a wonderful child's transferware waste bowl or dregs pot, circa 1890. Originally part of a child's complete toy tea set, this is the piece that is nearly always missing from the set. Shaped like a handleless cup, it stands 2-1/2" tall and measures about 4-1/2" in diameter across the top rim. The color is a rich chocolate brown. The bowl depicts a little girl named May standing in front of farmhouse wearing a dress and an apron. She is holding up the front of the apron which is filled with eggs. She is also wearing a hat, and one of her socks is falling down. This endearing scene, which repeats three times around the perimeter, is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers. The piece was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The pattern name is "MAY". The bowl is marked "Staffordshire Englad". The pattern is commonly associated with Allerton's pattern number 753. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic.
