A fine set of three Chinese blue and white export porcelain saucers, decorated with playing children, Kangxi period, c. 1700/20 description: This auction is for an attractive set of three antique porcelain saucers, hand decorated in blue under glaze on white, originating from China. These lovely collectibles were made for the export market to Europe and are dating to the early 18th century (Kangxi period) .Chinese porcelain was often traded by the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), which had special trading privileges to Japan (Decima Island) and China. The wealthy Dutch merchants adored the delicate Chinese porcelain and large quantities were shipped to Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although manufactured to be used, this Oriental porcelain used to be displayed in special China cabinets in distinguished houses. The moulded saucers show decorations of playing children, within a border of lotus shaped reserves. In The Netherlands the children on Chinese porcelain traditionally were called zotjes (meaning: little madmen, because their clothing was interpreted as a strait-jacket!). In Chinese they are called Wa-Wa , after the sounds they produce at an early age. All saucers measure 4 3/4 inches (122 mm) across.
