Chinese Early Republic (1912-1916) HandPainted Polychrome Scholar Scene Porcelain Vase High quality fine porcelain and wonderfully executed hand painted scene porcelain vase. This vase is painted with a scene of a scholar in flowing blue red and white robe, drinking tea while knelling in an inspirational outdoor setting. The setting consists of green grass in the foreground, a towering cavern rock topped with a tree, wooden bridge and foliage in the background. The scene is against a white ground with small pits in the glaze showing that the vase was wood fired. On the base are red hand painted symbols. The four set symbols are a Hung-hsien mark used by the Emperor Hsuan Tung, Pu Yi, after he was removed from power in 1912 but still retained his title. This mark appeared just before World War I and would date the piece to 1912-1916. The other mark is not readable but is most likely that of the company that produced this wonderful piece. The vase is in excellent like new condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. It looks like it has been adorning a curio shelf all of its life. The foot has worn due to occasional moving. This vase is notable for the quality of the painting, the traditional scholarly scene and for its excellent condition.
