's a simply BEAUTIFUL all-original 1881 Gold Walking Stick Head right out of a very old Ohio house. It has the name "Lewis Merriman" engraved on top and it must have been a gift long ago because it is also inscribed "Christmas 1881". With a little research I was able to find out that Lewis Merriman was a prominent citizen of Kenton Ohio in the late 19th century. He was named the president of Kenton National Bank in 1881. I could just imagine him walking down the street with a fancy gold-headed stick! The craftsmanship & detail of this old cane head is absolutely astounding! Measuring 3" tall, it has not been polished anytime recently and yet it still shines like new...in fact it is so shiny that it was difficult for me to take decent photographs due to reflections(sorry!). It feels quite heavy in my hand...I think that the gold content must be quite high. By peering inside, it looks to me like the octagon-shaped smooth part on top is obviously solid gold. I can also see the original old adhesive (probably animal-based glue). This glue residue makes it difficult to tell if the sides are solid gold as well. Based on the hefty weight and the very shiny outside appearance, I would have to say that AT THE VERY LEAST, the sides are heavy gold plate as I see NO wear through at all.
