A Fighting Cavalry General. -PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN-(1831-1888)• U.S. Military Academy Class of 1853,• Service in Pacific Northwest (Yakima War & Rouge River Wars), • Colonel, 2nd Michigan Cavalry (5/25/1862), • Brigadier General, USV (7/1/1862), • Major General, USV (12/31/1862), • Brigadier General, USA (9/20/1864), • Major General, USA (11/8/1864), • Lt. General, USA: 1869 (Replacing Grant after election as President). A great soldier and wily cavalry commander, Sheridan was instrumental in the Union strategy to overwhelm the Confederacy, transforming the cavalry into a dynamic fighting branch of the armed forces. From The Union Army , vol. 8: The battle of Missionary Ridge was fought two months later, and it was Sheridan who, with his division, carried the ridge under a hot enfilading fire from thirty pieces of Confederate artillery, and a tempest of musketry from well-filled rifle pits on its summit; worked his way up to the front till he reached the highest crest, and then went thundering down the ridge until within 500 yards of the headquarters of the Confederate commanding general, Bragg. Competent authority declares that in this battle he really did as much as in any other to earn what finally came to him, the generalship of the U. S. Army.
