You simply will NOT find a Civil War date Appletons Railway Guide online. Rare book dealers place Civil War date Appletons with serious collectors and institutions without offering ANY FOUND COPIES to the general public or the secondary market. These copies are on everyone’s waiting list.

Complete with the LARGE 1863 Railway folding map bound in at front.

September 1863. Appletons’ Railway and Steam Navigation Guide. D.A. Appleton, New York. Paper covers, 288 pages, 75 railway maps, 1 large folding map. Guidebook is approx. 5 x 7 inches.

Condition. THIS COPY is easily handled and easily read. Corner wear at covers and small dog-ear wear at first few pages (generally advertising pages). Addtional wear to cover of spine at foot and head. NOT at all fragile. Interior pages all tightly bound, near fine, cover tightly attached. Easily thumbed, read, and scanned.

Images below are digi-photos to show the large map (sometimes my camera flashes, sometimes it doesn’t – sorry). There is a small opening at one fold margin at far

Folding the map back into place:

PLEASE NOTE: overhead light for my camera makes pages look yellowish (See scans further below for clearer images of the internal pages). Just a few more digi-photos of maps and routes from inside pages, showing how easily this book is to handle without threat:

I live in Asheville, North Carolina. I didn’t know there was a railroad in Western North Carolina in 1863. Though proposed as of this date, they didn’t get a railroad bed up the Saluda grade into Asheville until 1880 (long after the Transcontinental Railroad was completed):

BIRTH OF THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD! Legislation passed in 1862, the eastern portion of the beginning of the Transcontinental Railroad in Sept 1863 herein referred to as ”The Great Pacific Railway from Council Bluffs to Sacramento.”

Additional scans below include some of the wonderful advertising of the period, even though in 1863 all trade with the Confederate States was strictly banned. You would go to prison for treason if caught selling a roll of wire (or transporting it) from North to South.

Also, many of these railroads were being used to carry soldiers, armament, and supplies in 1863… and many of the rail lines were being sabotaged in both northern and southern states. MAJOR battles taking place in the Civil War in 1863 include Chancellorsville, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga… et al.

This rare book is from the state collection of Michael Levy or Norfolk Virginia. I was lucky to find it among the few lots of paper I purchased directly from his estate several years ago. My best guess is you will never see a Civil War date Appletons offered on eBay again. Or if one is, it will likely be years from now.
