Civil War DS E D Townsend John Rawlins Grant Sec of War E.D. TOWNSEND (1817 - 1893) Union brevet brigadier general and chief of staff to Winfield Scott. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., on War Department stationery, Washington, May 4, 1869 certifying the authenticity of a government record. Countersigned by John A. RAWLINS (1831-69) as Secretary of War. Moderate toning and dampstains, small losses at left margin, horizontal folds with only partial separation, else very good. Rawlins is scarce as Secretary of war as he died at the end of 1869.EXA 1034 Needless to say, this is a genuine piece, not a copy or reproduction. Please see below for more specific details.
