BEAUTIFUL GAR POST LETTER SIGNED BY A WIA & POW VETERAN OF THE HARD-FIGHTING 22nd IOWA INFANTRY ON ATTRACTIVE GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT VIGNETTE LETTERHEAD!! "Headquarters U.S. Grant Post, No. 8, Department of Idaho, G. A. R., Shoshone, Idaho" letter dated Aug. 12, 1891 in the hand of Wenzel Zika, private Co.K., Iowa 22nd Infantry. Zika was a German born soldier who was wounded in action at Port Gibson Mississippi on May 1, 1863 and was taken prisoner of war at Winchester Virginia on Sept. 19, 1864. His name also appears on the muster roll of the State of Colorado's Soldiers' and Sailors' Home (Nov. 30, 1904), as he resided in Pueblo Colorado post-war. In this Letter to the Adjutant General, Zika requests a certificate of his discharge from the 22nd Iowa!
