A.Conan DOYLE. A STUDY IN SCARLET, Early reprint, 1898.

A.Conan DOYLE. A STUDY IN SCARLET. With a Note on Sherlock Holmes by Dr.Joseph BELL. Illustrated by George Hutchinson. Ward Lock & Co., 1898 reprint.

Hardback, publisher's red & buff cloth, spine gilt, 8 inches tall by 5 across, xx+224 pages + 12 page publisher's catalogue at the end, Hutchinson's b&w illustrations throughout. Spine very faded, somewhat creased and begining to fray at the ends, corners of the boards slightly worn, cloth on the front board rippled, inner hinges cracked but holding, first & last leaf rather browned, contents slightly browned, but still overall a decent copy.

A Study in Scarlet first appeared as Beeton's Christmas Annual in November 1887, and then the first book edition was published the following year, with 6 line drawings. Hutchinson's 40 illustrations were added to the book in the edition of 1891, and Joseph Bell's introduction (he who was Doyle's model for Holmes ) appeared in 1893. That edition was then reprinted in 1894, 1896 and here in 1898. None of these early editions are common, and all of them are highly collectable !
