This 10.5" dark purple historical Staffordshire soup bowl comes from James and Ralph Clews "Picturesque Views" series, comprising views mostly of the Hudson River area. It is a scarce view and quite a scarce color in the dark, rich purple. The scene depicts a view of "Troy from Mount Ida, Hudson River," and that title is transfer printed on the reverse. The mark is one of the best and clearest I have seen in this series. The condition of this soup is near MINT, with just a couple of areas of outer rim wear as seen in the last photo.........t aren't even any utensil marks or scratches on either the front or back surfaces. Troy, NY is the county seat of Rensselaer County and home of Uncle Sam. It is located on either side of the Hudson River, a few miles north of Albany, NY.
