deformed harzburgite, sub-Moho

slightly deformed harzburgite, from below the petrological Moho boundary

Table Mountain Massif, Bay of Islands Ophiolite, Newfoundland

The specimen, an unpolished sawn slice, has been interpreted as upper mantle residue after extraction of basalt. Weakly deformed portions of the outcrop contain ribbons of orthopyroxene; more strongly deformed portions also contain metamorphic amphibole. I've not seen a thin section but I do not believe amphibole is present in this specimen. The area also has outcrops of dunite with wehrlite viens; I will have a specimen of this in a later auction. Precise co-ordinates will be provided .

11x8x1.2 cm. Weight is 225 g.
