HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE COIN

During World War I, Americans volunteered from all parts of the country to fill the newly formed flying squadrons. A wealthy Lt. ordered medallions in solid bronze displaying the squadrons emblem for every member to wear in a leather sack around their neck. Shortly after aquiring the medallion a pilot was shot down behind enemy lines, and immediately captured by the German army.
