Don Hong-Oai Chinese 1929-2004

Excerpts from an article by Suzanne Herel, Chronicle Staff Writer on Friday, June 18, 2004

Don Hong-Oai was a photographer who built a career as an artist by blending photo negatives to create poetic images of the Chinese landscape.

Mr. Don was born in Guangzhou, China, the youngest of 24 siblings and half siblings. He was taken to live in Vietnam at a young age after the sudden deaths of his parents. At the age of 7, he was apprenticed to a Saigon portrait studio, where he began learning the basics of photography.

As a hobby, he photographed landscapes and -- because he didn't want his pictures to appear flat -- experimented with putting negatives together.

In 1950, he attended Vietnam University College of Art and began to teach photography. He later studied with a 104-year-old master, Long Chin-San, in Taiwan.

Mr. Don practiced his art in France and Malaysia, where he worked as a photographer for the Red Cross.

Then in 1979, he found his way to the United States, where he knew no one, and settled into San Francisco's Chinese community. He lived in
