Dorothy Ashby --

Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby

(reissue) . . .

Incredible stuff from the great Dorothy Ashby!

This album is one of her best, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam -- one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s , clearly opened up a bit through the work of Alice Coltrane. Here, Dorothy's playing her unique version of funky jazz harp , but she's doing so in a setting that's a bit more steeped in some of the spiritual jazz and soul styles floating around the Chicago scene of the time.

Some cuts have Dorothy's harp mixed with electric Kalimba -- in that great Maurice White/Earth Wind & Fire sound -- and others feature instrumentation that includes vibes, koto, and oboe.

Includes the amazing breakbeat track "The Moving Finger" -- worth the price of the album alone -- plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", and "Drink".
