Fort McPherson , Nebraska Territory Fort McPherson, Nebraska Territory was established in 1863 by the United States Government. Its purpose was to protect the immigrants from Indian depredations along the Oregon Trail. During the Indian Wars of the 1860’s this fort was the center of activity with many expeditions sent out trying to subdue Indian hostilities in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado. Many notables came to Fort McPherson as commanders and Indian fighters including Major Eugene Carr, General Phil Sheridan, Buffalo Bill Cody and the famous North brothers who commanded an extremely effective battalion of Pawnee scouts. Lt. Colonel George A. Custer led the 7th Cavalry from Fort McPherson on June 15th, 1867, for operations against Indians in Kansas. This group of Indian Wars relics consists of (3) 50-70 casings, (3) 50-70 bullets, (3) 45-70 casings and (3) 45-70 bullets. The 50-70 and 45-70 casings are all of the early internally primed type, no externally primed cartridge casings are found at this historic location. The military at Fort McPherson started using the 50-70's in the 1860's and the 45-70's in the early 1870's. An interesting side note is how popular the big 50-70 was with Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody: General George Armstrong Custer was particularly fond of the .50- 70 for hunting and carried a sporterized Model 18
