DATES TO EARLY 1800s
This rare instrument comes with it's dovetailed solid wood box fitted to store and protect it. Below you will find the descriptive details but first you need to know that t are two missing parts; (1) the compass needle and (2) the glass protective cover. The remaining pieces are all intact and in good condition, appropriate to its advanced age and previous use.

Sturdy and solid wood (possibly mahogany) case measures 15 1/4 inches wide, 7 1/2 inches deep and it stands 4 1/2 inches high - lid has deeply etched characters carved into the top outside surface but they can be removed if you decide to restore the box Compass face signed "Gregg & Rupp New York" Instrument is 15 inches wide and the compass diameter measures 6 inches Metal appears to be brass and it needs to be cleaned Box fastens with two large hooks in front - it has a keyhole but t is no key
