RARE VERY EARLY 20th Century US Mint Washington Presidential Indian Peace Medal

(Ex Presidential Coins &Antiques Auction 81, Lot 450) This is 76 mm (3inch) in diameter, 223-gram (7.8 oz) DARK Bronze VERY EARLY 20 th Century Striking of the US Mint Presidential/Indian Peace medal of George Washington. The obverse was designed by Pierre Simon Duvivier and originally used on the Washington Before Boston Revolutionary War Award Medal. The reverse, with the now familiar PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP clasping hands, was designed by John Riech. It is in CHOICE Glossy AU condition with areas of high point rub. This is a VERY EARLY 20 th century strike in an olive bronze tone. These medals were not available to collectors until 1903, when Barber and Morgan modified the Washington Before Boston obverse and “muled” it with a John Reich “Peace and Friendship” reverse. The medal is not pictured in Julian’s book of 19 th century medals because it was not made until the 20 th century. This is according to RW Julian’s Medals of the United States Mint 1792-1892, which includes mintage figures up to 1903/04. The early mintages were very tiny. The first strikings of this medal were in a reddish bronze similar to the finishes of the last years of the 19 th century.
