J: is an uncommon A. Semmendinger Excelsior wooden wet plate camera in 5x7 format, circa early 1870's and built by August Semmendinger in Fort Lee, NJ. Camera is in overall very good condition, still solid with nice dark patina to finish. Shows typical scuffs, small edge bumps, missing one strip of trim at bottom of lens board opening. One of the bottom 1/4 20 extension rail fasteners looks non-original. This camera sets up & displays nicely measuring approx. 21" long with rails fully extended, stands 13.25" tall, and is 10" wide. When collapsed (rails folded) depth is 10". Tilt, focus, and front rise are in good working order. Original square cornered bellows are free of light leaks or misfolds. Also has rare focusing screen insert for back. A number of camera components are embossed "Excelsior A. Semmendinger Manuf's, Fort Lee, NJ" Comes with fixed aperture brass barrel lens which is marked "Darlot Paris" can not find any other markings. Brass has nice toning, has rack and pinion focusing with glass looking exceptionally clean & clear. Comes to sharp focus, but does vignette the 5x7 field in the corners (would be fine with 4x5). Lens appears to be contemporary to the camera's age. An early authentic, historically significant, American made camera.
