Phil's shooting on his doorstep on March 1, 2001 sparked the soap's biggest 'whodunnit' of all time. Likened to J. R. Ewing's shooting in Dallas, the 'Who Shot Phil?' saga left the 17m viewers who saw the episode - penned by Christopher Reason - guessing as to the identity of the mystery assailant.

In 2001, Phil Mitchell took a bullet outside his house, after a spate of villainy and dodgy dealing left him with a string of enemies ready to take him down. The identity of his would-be killer remained a mystery for months, until the shooter was revealed to be former girlriend Lisa Shaw. She'd gunned him down for sleeping with her best mate.
