THE RAVEN . Poe, Edgar Allan. Illustrations by Gustave Dore. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. This is a first edition in great shape, printed by Harper and Brothers in 1884, containing all 26 plates as called for. 109pp. HUGE and highly decorated elephant folio 19" x 15"; all page edges gilt. Gray pictorial cloth with full-cover angel illustration by Dore stamped in gold and black on the front board; light external edgewear and fading with the front design still bright with gilt, a truly nice piece which is usually found in dilapidated shape. Front hinge opens with front board and spine still as one, cleanly and easily fixed; really, the only flaw. The illustrations/leaves remain in nice shape and are bound. The Dore versions of the Poe poetical lines and stanzas are absolutely breathtaking. Truly showstopping not only in size but beauty, these are very rare illustrations in the first edition form. This book has sold in the thousands, and is considered the epoch of Dore's artwork.A true gem and exquisite gift.
