Edmund Quincy 1808-1877 was engaged in the anti-slavery movement from 1837 editor of the Abolitionist, and later the Anti-Slavery Standard, and during Garrison's absense, The Liberator. Offered a letter completely written in his hand to Francis Parkman in which he gives a lengthy quote of praise from his father Josiah Quincy's diary on Parkmans book about American Indians. I am also including an engraving of Edmund Quincy with engraved signature. The letter had been tipped into a book at one time and the remnants of its attachment can be seen in the scans. The letter reads as follows: Dedham May 13 1866 My Dear Mr Parkman, The following is the extract from my Fathers Diary relative to your "Pontiac", of which I spoke to you yesterday. "1854 Feb. 7. Read Parkman's "History of Pontiac's Conspiracy. A work of great merit, written with much apparent labour & research & graphic descriptions of absorbing interest. The characteristic traits of Indian life, working & feelings are sketched with a hand that well deserves to be called masterly I have seldom read a book with more entire approbation." Do you remember what Scott says somew in his diary about praise? That when it can be had sincere and unadulterated, a thing as hard to get as the Mountain Dew. A better praise is a cordial after all.
