ELKO, NEVADA Good For 121⁄2¢ In Trade, ELKO HOTEL BAR, Old "One Bit" SALOON Token This is a Good For 121⁄2¢ In Trade Token from the Elko Hotel Bar in Elko, Nevada. See map below. Given the common practice, in the early 1900’s, of offering a Drink and a Cigar for a quarter these were probably used as change. Elko was first inhabited in 1868, when it was at the east end of the railroad tracks built by the Central Pacific Railroad. When the railroad crews moved on, Elko remained, serving as a ranch and mining freight and supply center. Elko is said to have been named by Charles Crocker, a superintendent of the Central Pacific Railroad. He was especially fond of animal names and added the letter "O" to Elk. There is no definitive evidence of this naming history, but it has become the widely accepted version. Weight: 1.23 Gram, 21 Millimeter, Aluminum. Obverse: ELKO • HOTEL • BAR • All in a denticled border. Reverse: GOOD FOR • 121⁄2¢ • IN TRADE • All in a plain border. Elko, Nevada. The Token: A very pleasing example, it may have seen light use as it has a few marks. But is very well preserved and is still quite lustrous. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself. Remember, FREE SHIPPING! And as always with my auctions, after the minimum bid there is no reserve. I ship the day after cleared payment.
