In this lot we are offering a large standing bronze of Siva which was recently excavated from a river bed in East Java very near Mount Kelud. This notorious volcano erupted 8 times during the Majapahit period, and 20 times since the fall of the Majapahit Kingdom.
As can be clearly seen from our photographs, this ancient bronze, dating at least from the 15th century, has suffered the severe effects of the highly acidic soil found in this region. Originally a four arm bronze of Siva, it now only has two arms left, and t are two large areas, and one small area w the bronze has either been entirely eaten or broken away. Still, all in all, this is fascinating bronze statue with an incredible patina of verdigris, ultramarine, and highlights of red and chocolate brown.
This bronze is 31 cm in height, and the base is 7.5 cm in diameter. Caste in the lost wax method, it weighs 1.5 kilograms.
