EXCEPTIONAL ANTIQUE TEKKE "TURRET-GOL" CHUVAL, West Turkestan, 3rd qtr, 19th C, Circa: 1850-1875. The exact size is: 2'-6" x 4'-2" (76 x 127 cm). This classic 1870's (or earlier) collector Tekke weaving having six "Salor-gols" and "sararch-palak" minor gols in the field comes to the market in very good condition for the collector with some damage to the left and right borders and two holes cut into the field, the smaller one in the bottom center turret-gol being 1" square and the larger one in the elem being 1.5"x1.75". Otherwise, this beautiful and rare collector item is in excellent overall condition with high pile in the field. It is interesting to note that the ground color of the spaciously drawn elem panel with "ashik" motifs is an insect-derived cochineal dye lot. The wool quality is superb and the handle is soft and velvety. This very beautiful chuval has an extremely high asymmetrical knot count of 15x31, or approximately 465 KSPI on finely spun natural ivory wool warps and natural grey wool wefts. Similar mid-19th century or earlier specimens of this top shelf collector type of Tekke chuval featuring the six-gul layout of Salor turret-gol motifs as a field design accompanied by the "sarach-palak" minor gols can be found in the rug book literature.
