Fantasticly Rare Pliocene Chiton (mollusc) from Terre Rosse Siena Fm., Italy

Item DescriptionSpecies : Chiton sieniensis (8-plated mollusc)
Age : Pliocene Formation : Terre Rosse Siena Fm.
Location : Italy Size of Fossil : 4.4 cm
Here is an extremely rare specimen that was acquired from an old collection. This is an excellent example of Chiton sieniensis on the slab. Usually, only single plates of these primitive mollusks are found - upon death, the individual plates fall apart very quickly. A complete chiton is extremely rare in the fossil record. This specimen preserves a beautiful articulated chiton with all 8 plates intact. This specimen is 3-dimensional with great color and contrast. It is well positioned in the center of the natural block of matrix. This is an exciting specimen of a very uncommon fossil mollusk.
Chitons first appear in the fossil record in the Devonian but their fossil record is relatively poor. Generally only isolated plates are found making classification and descriptions of species difficult.
This is a rare and unusual specimen! There are not many of these available for sale.
