This auction is for a rare and hard-to-find Fenton cranberry opalescent hobnail fan vase. The feature which classifies this piece as rare is the crimping on the top edge, which Fenton referred to as "pie crimping". The majority of Fenton fan vases were produced with a straight edge [not ruffled or pie crimped]. In my first photo, it is the vase on the far right. I believe this was one of the first produced with this crimping. I am saying this because this particular piece was obviously not made completely even. The pie crimping on the back side was pulled up to approximately 3 1/2" while the other side was pulled up to approximately 3 1/4". The opalescence varies; again, these items were produced in crude factory conditions at the time. The piece is pre-logo [not marked] as it was made much prior to the time frame when Fenton began marking glassware [1971]. There are no cracks, chips, damage, flea bites, or repairs; no damaged hobnails. The inside of the vase is clear, with no water staining or fading. The difference in crimping size in no way detracts from the beauty or rarity of this piece. There is a small amount of camera glare in the photo! This piece can be seen in the Fenton Glass Compendium 1940-70 by author John Walk, where it is valued at $100-125 on page 140. All of the cranberry pie crimp pieces shown may be featured
