A very desireable pair of early tall flint glass candleholders from the Pittsburgh region that date to the middle of the 19th century.Heavy leaded pressed clear glass sticks of two-part construction, with tooled wafer center joinings and wonderful pronounced knops. They have a basic 6-sided cylindrical form and deep candle cups, hollow all the way down to the solid knop just above the joiner point. The cups are of unusually large open tulip form, with thick scalloped rims. They are excellent examples of colonial era flint glass and are of commanding proportions, making a grand statement on the sideboard, mantle or dining table. They stand 9 3/4 inches high, with typical slight variances in size due to potential pressing in different molds. The bases are wide and proportionate to the large cups at 5 inches. Both in very good condition, one having several small chips to the base underside as well as large trapped air bubbles. Also has several small fissures to the cup scallops which appear as having resulted in the cooling process during manufacture.A splendid pair of American pressed glass candlesticks in colonial era flint from the Pittsburgh region.Of tall and regal bearing.Period circa 1850-1870.
