FLEMISH SCHOOL, 17 TH CENTURY – AN EXTENSIVE LANDSCAPE Oil on canvas, 62.0 x 90.1 cm . With frame 84.0 x 111.0 cm . Over theyears I have collected a good number of old master paintings, several of which I would like to hand over to other collectors over the next few months. We have moved so there simply no longer is enough wall space to hang them. This is one of the larger paintings on offer, showing an extensive wooded landscape, a village in the distance and a variety of people going about their daily activities. The painting has been attributed to Lucas van Uden (1595 - 1672), which is not entirely unreasonable since Van Uden specialized in this type of extensive landscape and since it appears to bear his monogram (see pictures). However, I prefer to list as Flemish school, 17th century. The quality of this work speaks for itself, meaning it is clear that if not Van Uden, we have a work here by an accomplished artist. Given the fact that the painting was made over 350 years ago, it is in good concition, as the various details shown in the pictures reveal. There is craquelure, of course, a bit of thinning of the paint and inevitable darkening of some pigments, none of it unacceptable and actually part of the aging process.
