This piece of uranium ore weighs 81.8g (2.89oz) . This piece displays bright green fluorescent glowing areas on one side when viewed under a shortwave UV lamp. I gathered this piece from the ground near the Shinarump #1, #3, and #4 Mines in Grand County, Utah. Geiger Counter Readings Since this is a nicer specimen, I have taken extra time to get individual readings of this rock with three commonly used Geiger counters and probes in addition to the probe I normally use. The Inspector USB is a fairly common modern digital Geiger counter with an extremely sensitive built-in pancake tube. The Ludlum 44-9 probe is similar in sensitivity to the Inspector USB Geiger counter, though its protective screen blocks more alpha and beta particles than the one on the Inspector, leading to lower count rates. The numbers in the "shield closed" column for the 44-9 were obtained by measuring through the back side of the probe. The CDV-700 is very common in the US and is especially good for mineral collectors because its scale is calibrated for measurement of uranium minerals rather than for Cs-137. Due to the age of the devices, a wide range of readings is possible on CDV-700s unless they have been calibrated by a qualified technician. The CDV-700 readings below are from a counter that has been rebuilt and calibrated. Counter/Probe Beta Shield Closed
