Black and white with 24K gold-leaf halos.

Painted burlap backing board is 11" x 7" x 1/2"

A multi-media artist and ceramist and mid-century modernist who made his home in St. Louis, Missouri, Fred A, Henze was born in Germany in 1904.

He immigrated to the US in 1923 at the age of 19.

Noted for his religious subjects, his ceramic mosaic work can be found in churches, chapels and convents across the US, and at the Black Madonna Shrine in Eureka, Missouri.

His work is in various museums, and there was an annual Fred Henze prize awarded by the St. Louis Artist's Guild at the time this tile was created.

He was awarded many honors including the Dwight Dillon Award in 1960, and received national acclaim with his exhibitions in various media.

Henze died in 1971, in his adopted home of St. Louis, Missouri.
