*FRENCH PLAYWRIGHT VICTORIEN SARDOU RARE DISDERI CDV*
- Source: eBay
He was the most popular French playwright of his era, author of well made plays including Cleopatra, acted by Sarah Bernhardt and more popular at the time than Shakespeare's version. Bernhardt also acted in his Fedora and La Tosca, the basis for Puccini's opera, although Maurice Barrymore maintained that Sardou had based that play on a play of his own that he'd sent to Bernhardt. He also wrote several plays that were performed in English by Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. A rare carte de visite photograph circa 1880 of Victorien Sardou. Light wear else fine.
