Child's Flow Blue TransferwareMiniature Toy PlateLITTLE RED RIDING HOODLE PETIT CHAPERON ROUGEWOLF COMES KNOCKINGGienLuneville, France c1900This is stunning toy transferware plate, originally part of a complete miniature children's or doll's dinner service. It measures a diminutive 4 3/8" in diameter, transfer printed in rich cobalt flow blue. The plate resembles the transferware made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid 19th century, but instead it was made by Gien, one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France. The plate is marked "Porcelaine Opaque de Gien" around a crown and castle.The plate is decorated with a scene from the story of Little Red Riding Hood, The wolf is seen standing outside the door to Grandmother's house, knocking to come in. The plate says 'TOC TOC', or 'KNOCK KNOCK'.The plate is in good condition with a small shallow chip on the edge at 12 o'clock and no other chips, cracks stains or repairs. Overall fine glaze crazing original to the making consistent with age and typical of the period. This little plate was impeccably potted and the transfers were printed with great attention to detail.This rare image is a fabulous little treat, simply irresistible in its miniature size.
