First edition first printing of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four published by Harcourt Brace in 1949; hardcover with very good facsimile dust jacket,priced at $3.00 in a tan cloth book that bright, square, unmarked and in very good condition. A good read and a great writer.Note: This is the true stated first American edition and NOT the book club edition. The book club editions have a small black dot on the bottom right corner of the rear cover. This copy does not have the small black dot. Book club editions will have the statement, Printed by The Haddon Craftsmen under the First American Edition statement on the copyright page or no first edition statement and Printed by the Kingsport Press. This copy does not.Note also that the dust jacket spine of the First Trade Edition has black lettering on a white banner. The book club edition has white lettering on a black banner.While the totalitarianism that provoked George Orwell into writing 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' seems to be passing into oblivion, his harrowing, cautionary tale of a man trapped in a political nightmare has had the opposite fate, and its relevance and power to disturb our complacency seem to grow decade by decade.
