This is an original aquatint and engraving from Miserere by Georges Rouault, entitled "LE DUR METIER DE VIVREÃ,Â..." ("It is hard to live . . ."). Plate XII (12) with original sleeve with title and plate number. From the original edition of 450, printed by Jacquemin of Paris on heavy laid paper with Arches and Ambroise Vollard watermarks, and published in 1948 by La SociÃf©tÃf© d'Edition l'Etoile Filante of Paris. Signed and dated 1922 in the plate. Sheet measures approximately 50.5 cm by 65.5 cm and printed area measures approximately 46 cm by 60 cm. This work was purchased in the early 1970s from the Parke-Bernet Galleries of New York city. This is one of nine (9) Miserere prints have available for purchase, so please be sure to browse our inventory. Additional images forwarded upon request. All 58 prints from Miserere were recently featured at the Museum of Bibilical Art in New York city in a show entitled "This Anguished World of Shadows: Georges Rouault's Miserere et Guerre", which ran from 3/30/06 to 5/28/06. This was the first time the complete work had been shown in New York in almost 40 years. This exhibition was especially notable due to the limited number of editions of Miserere which remain intact. The museum published a 192-page color catalog for the exhibition which features almost 80 images, including all 58 plates.
