DICTIONNAIRERAISONNÉ DE L'ARCHITECTURE FRANÇAISE DU XIE AU XVIE SIÈCLE. Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, 1858. French, 10 v. front. (port., v. 10) illus. 24 cm. Paris, B. Bance [etc.], 1858. Complete in 10 volumes. Leather spines, marbled boards. The covers show some rubbing and there is some light toning to the contents but overall this is a Very Good complete set in a nice quarter leather binding. Viollet-le-Duc lived 1814 - 1879 and was for many years in charge of historic buildings and monuments all over France. According to an article in the New York Times in 1988 (included here), for many years his preservation work had been scorned, but beginning with a large exhibition in 1980 at the Grand Palais in Paris which "put the case for Viollet-le-Duc as an intelligent, imaginative and resourceful man who had the courage to find a whole new set of solutions to problems no one else had been asked to cope with," his historic stock began to rise. This dictionary of Gothic Architecture with hundreds of illustrations and line drawings, etc. is the author's magnum opus.
