Anna Mary Robertson (Grandma) Moses (American, 1860-1961) became internationally recognized for her nostalgic depictions of rural American life during the early 20th century. Her simplified realism, combined with her luminous use of colors, resulted in the unique style that we see illustrated in this piece. The scenes she painted of happy, country life were often based on memories of her childhood, time spent in the Shenandoah Valley, or her time in upstate New York on the farm she shared with her husband, Thomas Salmon Moses.
