This antique box iron came from an estate here in southern New England. * Embossed on the top GROTON N. Y. MAGIC NO.1 * This iron was made by the Nelson H. Streeter Company of Groton, New York, makers of the "Sensible" irons * Manufactured in the late 1800's * Iron measures 6-1/2" x 3" and stands 5-1/2" tall to the top of the handle * The lever on the right side of the handle pulls up to release the cover which can then be placed on another iron base * This iron is pictured in Esther S. Berney's book A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO PRESSING IRONS AND TRIVETS, page 14, plate 17A and in Dave Irons book IRONS BY IRONS , page 32, plate 55R (although this iron is embossed SENSIBLE, it is identical to the MAGIC NO.1). * Much of the black japanning is worn off the top and handle and the nickel plating is corroded or gone, but otherwise the iron is in very good condition.* There is NO RESERVE! * There is NO HANDLING CHARGE!
