This is a museum quality lap desk circa 1865 that needs a lot of restoration. The collector that we obtained the desk from stated that the desk is made of camphor wood and the panels with the design (animals on a fence)are made from bois durci. Bois durci is a composition made of albumen extracted from blood or eggs mixed with dark wood flour such as ebony and rosewood; invented by Charles Lepage of France in 1855. The inside writing surface is covered in green velvet. The compartment has a place for 2 square ink bottles and a pen tray. The size of the desk is 12 1/2 x 13 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. The pictures do a good job showing the restoration needed on the desk. This piece is being sold AS IS. It needs a lot of TLC but is a great period piece well worth restoring.
