DESCRIPTION Japanese hanging scroll : "TOKAIDO-GOJUSANTSUGI". SOFUKU w/box @k1006 This scroll comes with an original wooden box. *Tokaido-Gojusantsugi (Fifty-three stages of the Tokaido) : "Fifty-three stages of the Tokaido" are 53 post stages reaching Sanjo-Ohashi of Kyoto from Nihonbashi of Edo, in the Edo era. It was established in 1601 by Ieyasu Tokugawa to promote traffic of people between Edo / Kyoto and to plan prosperity of the stages that were the foothold. In doing so, Ieyasu obeyed the narration of the Buddhism "that an apprentice to a priest became a Bodhisattva through a trip to meet 53 people" and decided a number of a post town. The history of Tokaido had deep relation to Buddhism.
