A special piece, manufactured by Theodore Haviland and hand painted by well-known studio artist Louis, nearly overflowing with lovely, full, typically French pink and white roses cascading over water. The masterful depiction of the roses' reflection in lightly rippling water creates a dreamy effect that draws the viewer right into the picture--you can almost hear the cool water trickling past. The color palette is very pleasing - rich, rosy pink and creamy ivory flowers are set against soft green foliage, blue-green water, and a pale yellow background. The self-handles, or "ears", add interest to the bowl's shape, which measures 10" "from ear to ear" and 2" from table to rim. The beautifully detailed scalloped edge is heavily gilded and shows only a few tiny spots of wear. Accomplished studio artist Louis signed the piece in the water just below the pink roses. The outside of the bowl is painted with simpler versions of the roses on a pale green background (photo 3). The mark on the bottom reads "Theodore Haviland, Limoges, FRANCE, Patent applied for", indicating manufacture between 1891 and the 1920's (sorry, I forgot to shoot that photo!).
