Very old Handlan Model 28 Oil-burning Semaphore lamp. This lantern is a Handlan-Buck with the Union Pacific Railroad marking U.P.R.R. The Model 28 has a sliding door and a single 4 1/2" diameter green lens. This lantern has the side mounting socket and is the early non-recessed style. This was manufactured around 1910 when the company was known as the Handlan Buck Manufacuring Company. This is a very early Semaphore lamp because t is no outside wick adjuster, instead a short shaft burner is used which requires that the sliding door be opened to adjust the wick. Lantern is complete and in good shape. Top of lantern is marked HANDLAN, ST LOUIS. Sliding door marked HANDLAN BUCK MFG. CO, ST LOUIS U.S.A. Has some chips in the paint, but no rust or rust holes.
