LOW STARTING BID! NO RESERVE!INCLUDES CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY HANNIBAL HAMLIN (180 9-1891 ) Hannibal Hamlin was the f irst R epublican Vice President of the United States. He entered the national political arena in 1843 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1848. Impressed with Hamlin's stance against slavery, Abraham Lincoln chose the Maine native as his running mate in his successful bid for the Presidency in 1860. Hamlin served as Vice-President for one term before returning to the U.S. Senate for two more terms. During the 2008 campaign, before Senators Obama and McCain named their running mates, M.J. Stephey wrote in TIME magazine: "A notorious do-nothing politician, Hamlin preferred to use his office to grant favors and have fun on the government's dime. The Republican Party picked him to be Abraham Lincoln's running mate mostly for geographical reasons; they needed an East Coast politician to balance Lincoln's Midwest roots, and Hamlin's non-existent legislative record as a House representative, a U.S. Senator and Maine's Governor made him a safe choice.
