One of the most famous and popular American illustrators of his era, the artist Harrison Cady (1877-1970) was especially well known for providing the illustrations from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s that accompanied the daily newspaper column "Bedtime Stories" by the children's book author Thornton Burgess. This original working drawing by Cady, executed in pencil, pen and ink, accompanied the Burgess story that appeared on August 4, 1951. (We are also including with the drawing a photocopy of the Burgess story that appeared in various newspapers on that day.)The drawing measures 7 1/4 inches by 5 7/8 inches (sheet size) and is signed by Cady in ink at the lower left. Under the drawing, also in ink, the artist has given the drawing's caption ("He loves the old stonewall.") The drawing is attached at the top to its mat and is housed in a beautiful custom gilded frame measuring a total of 15 1/8 inches by 14 inches. This drawing of a chipmunk sitting on a stone wall is in excellent condition, with only some very minor soiling to the sheet and some very minor loss to the gilding on the frame. We are offering this charming and whimsical children's drawing by a significant American illustrator with a low opening bid and with no reserve, in the expectation that it will achieve its appropriate value.
