“ Oeconomia Catechesis Palatinae: praemisso prologo, deCatecheticis institutionibus in genere, & Catechesios, in specie, Palatinae origine & fatis: subjectaque, speciminis loco, primae Dominicae sectionis, secundum analysin, pertractatione elaborata ” by Hieronymi van Alphen, S.S. theologiae doctoris, et in Academia Trajectina professoris ordinarii, was published Trajecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht, Netherlands]: Apud Guilielmum Kroon, dated 1729 on the title page. T are lxvi, 986 unmarked pages of Latin text with a 10-page dedication and 56-page prologue, plus 6 pages with 2 addenda, in a 5-7/8”W x 7-7/8”H format. Hieronymus van Alphen (1700-1758) was a professor of theology at Utrecht, the son of theologian Simon Hieronymus van Alphen (1665-1742) and grandfather of poet Hieronymus van Alphen (1746-1803). The book contains outlines for a year-long cycle of sermons (52 Sundays) on the questions of the Heidelberg Catechism. “The Heidelberg Catechism (also known as the Palatinate Catechism) was composed in Heidelberg at the request of Elector Frederick III, who ruled the Palatinate, an influential German province, from 1559 to 1576. An old tradition credits Zacharius Ursinus and Caspar Olevianus with being coauthors of the new catechism. Both were certainly involved in its composition, although one of them may have had primary responsibility.
