Hippocratis Coi Medicorum Omnium longe principis, opera quae apud ad nos exta[n]t Omnia: Per Ianu Cornarium Medicum Physicum latina lingua conscripta, & denuo ex toto recognita. Addito Indice foecundissimo .Basileae: Frobe, 1554. Rare and desirable collection. This is the second Froben edition of the works of Hippocrates of Cos, as translated from the Greek to Latin by Janus Cornarius. Notably, Cornarius directed the first Froben edition (in Greek) of Hippocrates' works (1538) and that edition is considered “the first edition in which the text had been critically examined. He had revised and corrected the text by comparison with three ancient manuscripts; more than 4,000 passages which had been either omitted or altered in the Venetian edition [were] restored” (Pilcher, Lewis Stephen. A list of books by some of the old masters of medicine and surgery , p. 21). Cornarius then went on to translate the Greek into Latin. Hippocrates of Cos (c. 460 BC – c. 370 BC) was an ancient Greek physician and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is referred to as the father of Western medicine in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine.
