Description: This white-bordered postcard shows a small section of Hollywood Blvd. with Grauman's Egyptian Theater in the center. The card probably dates from not long after that marvelous landmark was built. By 1921, Hollywood was the undisputed center of movie-making in the world, yet the town itself was still rustic and unrefined -- not unlike many of the movie actors living t at the time? Based on the success of his theaters in downtown Los Angeles (the Rialto, the Million Dollar, and the Metropolitan), Sid Grauman was the man to help civilize Hollywood by creating its first movie palace ! Or so thought Hollywood real estate entrepeneur C. E. Toberman who purchased what was left of a lemon ranch on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard for the project. $800,000 and 18 months later, on October 18, 1922, the Egyptian Theater opened with Hollywood's first movie premiere: Douglas Fairbanks'
